Bonneville Salt Flats
Updated: Jan 17, 2022
If you are heading out I-80 in Utah towards Nevada, and you have an adventurous spirit like I do, consider stopping and driving on the Bonneville Salt Flats!
For a quick history of the Bonneville Salt Flats click here.
I don't know the exact mile marker that the rest area before you hit Nevada is that but once you get down to like Mile Marker 8 or 4 or near that, there is a rest area on the westbound side where you can drive out onto the Bonneville Salt Flats. Take the exit for the Rest Area and if you need to use the facilities go ahead. Just past the covered picnic tables is a small ramp down onto the flats. You will see cars and people out on the flats as you approach the rest area. Pick an area where there is nobody else and drive like there's no tomorrow and have fun but be safe and don't tear up the salt! It's a silly crazy thing to do that will take you more no more than a few minutes but how many of your friends can say that they drove on the famous Bonneville Salt Flats? Have some fun and go for it!
I had videos of my son driving my car on the flats but alas, I did not back them up before some low life stole my phone off the front seat of my car while I was in it. Lesson learned. I back up my pictures to the cloud now even though I am not a fan, and I am much better about backing up my pictures to my external hard drive which I keep in a faraday box when not in use.
Here's my one and only pictures from our trip out onto the flats. Grateful I have at least one as proof that we were there!
Here are a few pictures off the net. I hope the people who took them don't mind that I used them...
What am I drinking today?
I'm not, but if you are continuing on I-80 West and you are passing through Elko, Nevada there is a local coffee roaster there: Collective Coffee Roasters. I'm a big supporter of these little companies. They do not seem to have their own coffee shop but their coffee is available at the XP Gaming & Cafe. Now I know what you're thinking. Do I want to stop in a casino to support a local coffee roaster? After all it is Nevada. Suprise! It's not a casino but a board game cafe! How fun! Next time I am driving that way I will be making that stop.
Here is Collective Coffee Roasters website. You can order online.
